A 12-year-old girl in Bangladesh is suffering from a rare and painful condition that has left her chest and arm resembling a tree bark.

The girl, identified only as Muktamoni, is admitted at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment of the condition sometimes known as "tree man" disease.

Her right hand has swollen considerably and the left side of her chest has taken on a darker shade of brown, reportedly infested with parasites.

Medically, the condition is known as epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) and is so rare that it affects just six people around the world.

EV is inherited and both parents need to have the abnormal EV genes for a sufferer to contract it.

In January, a 27-year-old Bangladeshi man named Abul Bajander was also reported to have the condition.

Other cases have also been reported from Indonesia and Romania.
