National Super Alliance (Nasa) co-principal  and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang'ula has finally broken his silence over his senatorial seat and disclosed that he will defend it on August 8.

At the same time, Nasa Summit has endorsed Nasa founder and Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi to be the chairman of Nasa National Campaign Committee (Nacaco).

Wetangula's announcement brings to end speculations that he had decided to forego the seat and instead wait for appointment as Deputy Premier Cabinet secretary if Nasa forms the next government.

He said he will defend his seat on Ford-Kenya ticket adding that he was being strategic in preparation for the 2022 presidency. "When you see a ram moving away, don't think that it’s a coward, its preparing itself to hit its rival very hard," he said at Kanduyi market in Bungoma.

“By defending my seat, I’m not a coward, even my friend, the Bomet Governor, will be defending his,” he said, adding:  "We have already endorsed Raila Odinga as the Nasa presidential flag-bearer and we will change the constitution to allow another co-principal to take over in 2022." The Senate Minority Leader will battle it out  with three other candidates who are eying the post.

They include businessman Juma Mukhwana of Jubilee Party and veteran journalists David Makali and Boniface Nyongesa. Nyongesa recently resigned as the head of Sulwe FM, a Bukusu vernacular radio station owned by ***** Media Services.

Makali will be vying for the seat for the second time on ANC  after he was defeated in 2013 by-election Wetang’ula. Meanwhile, Mudavadi was endorsed the NASA campaign leader following a proposal by Raila to the summit. The summit comprises Raila, Mudavadi, Kalonzo Musyoka, Wetang’ula and Isaac Ruto.

Nacoco is the apex campaign decision-making body that will coordinate Nasa presidential campaign and overall Nasa campaign machinery. Modeled on the US Democratic Party National Committee, Mudavadi will preside over high-level research and strategy team of experts, communications, resource mobilisation, operations and logistics, and supported by a 24-hour presidential secretariat.

The former vice-president's team of 10 highly qualified personalities seconded by the partner parties to oversee a massive structure that runs through and is replicated in 47 County Campaign Coordinating Committees (CCCCs), 290 constituencies, 1,450 wards to the 40,000 polling stations.
